A Grounded Theory Analysis of three African American Expository Preachers of the Baptist Tradition in the Twenty-First Century. Unpublished doctoral dissertation. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/14f4c1a8-a821-4b8f-a861-26a4dea549a8 ENGLISH SUMMARY: This research explores the question: what expository features are found in the expository sermons of three African American preachers of the Baptist tradition? While there are a few sources published in the twenty-first century that study African American expository preaching, none of those sources focus on this particular aspect of the discipline, leading to a gap in knowledge and praxis-theory in the church and the academy. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the unique contribution of African American expository preaching to the field of expository preaching and to develop an African American expository preaching methodology that can be implemented to augment current homiletics curricula to include African American expository preachers. In order to answer this research question, I conducted an analysis of fifteen sermons of three African American expository preachers using a constructive grounded theory methodology. This grounded theory analysis identified the expository features that were the core concepts for developing an emerging theory for African American expository preaching. The core concept of the emerging theory was God’s provision. It was identified as the core category. 98 codes (expository features) were in this concept. The second major concept was Following Christ with 69 codes (expository features). The third major concept was Black suffering with 65 codes (expository features). I researched the concepts of the emerging theory by conducting a study on Black Suffering and God’s Provision. This study explored the concepts through a biblical, theological, historical, and ecclesiastical perspective. The study allowed Black voices to speak for themselves on the issue of Black suffering and God’s provision. Considering the impact of preaching in relation to Black suffering and God’s provision, I conducted a historical survey of homiletics in America by focusing on the major methods and influences of preaching. I also noted the homiletical pillars of African American expository preaching which influenced the emerging theory. The emerging theory for African American expository preaching is as follows: • God provides followers of Christ to address Black suffering and be the catalyst for hope, justice, and transformation. • God provides hope for African Americans as they endure hardship in America. • God provides justice for African Americans as they experience injustice through the systemic racism in America. • God provides transformation for African Americans through the ministry of the Black church to the community. This theory proposes several implications that can be helpful for homiletics, for example, preachers can address social-cultural issues without committing exegetical fallacy, that is, misapplying the Scriptures by teaching a truth that was not the original intent of the biblical author. Another implication is that preachers do not have to diminish their personal experiences while exegeting the sermon text because connecting their experience to the exegesis will help as they develop illustrations and applications for the congregation. Finally, the preacher has the ability to be their authentic self in the delivery of the message. Their choice of words, pace of delivery, inclusion of humor and emotional expressions are determined by the personality and preference of the preacher. 98 kodes (uitlegkenmerke) was in hierdie konsep.
