Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/a12e9f75-0e0f-413e-8180-8ac1dd84ca2c ENGLISH SUMMARY: Introduction and background: Catheter-related infections are significant complications for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), particularly catheter exit site infections. These infections are a critical concern for PD patients, increasing the risk of further tunnel infections and peritonitis. Exit site care should be performed using the correct techniques and self-care practices, and both patients and caregivers should follow infection control principles. Understanding the perceptions of PD patients and caregivers on catheter exit site care and infections can provide insights into their knowledge, practices, potential barriers and factors affecting the overall management of the exit site. Methods: This study employed an exploratory-descriptive, qualitative research design to explore the perceptions of PD patients and their caregivers. It was conducted in a PD unit at a military hospital in Taif, Saudi Arabia. A purposive sampling method was used, and the study included nine PD patients and five caregivers. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews guided by an interview schedule, with thematic analysis applied to interpret the narrative data. The Health Research Ethics Committee of Stellenbosch University granted ethical approval, and permission was obtained from the research committee at the selected institution. The study followed principles of trustworthiness and adhered to ethical standards. Results: The data revealed four main themes and subthemes. Participants shared similar views on exit site care and infection management, demonstrating familiarity with the correct exit site care procedures. Although they understood what constitutes best practices, various barriers were identified, preventing consistent adherence to exit site care. Identified barriers included routine fatigue, personal responsibilities, and limited access to medical supplies. The findings suggest that addressing these challenges and finding solutions to overcome them may encourage participants to follow recommended exit site care practices, ultimately preventing infections. Conclusion: In promoting effective exit site care practices, it is necessary to maintain a healthy exit site to reduce infection rates among PD patients. Strategies should be created to help patients and caregivers overcome the barriers. Die studie was in 'n PD-eenheid by 'n militere hospitaal in Taif, Saoedi-Arabie, uitgevoer. Doelgerigte steekproefneming metode was gebruik, insluitend nege PD-pasiente en vyf versorgers.
