The high rates of GBV in South African societies, particularly in underprivileged communities, continue to be a human rights issue. The growing number of reported cases of gender-based, domestic, and sexual violence is a reminder that GBV continues to rob women and children of their basic human right to life and dignity. GBV constitutes an important challenge to school safety, and directly undermines the creation of an enabling school environment that supports personal growth and development. Under such circumstances, protective factors available to children play a crucial role in helping them change the negative behaviours and orientations of societies by supporting the change and encouraging respect for others. The empowerment of women and children has become a worldwide priority in addressing GBV. This study explored the experiences of six young women who engaged in one such initiative which was aimed at addressing violence and the abuse of children in primary schools in the historically marginalised community of Mitchells Plain. A social constructivist research paradigm underpinned this exploratory study which generated qualitative data using semi-structured interviews and World Café (WC) with six women. A multi-theoretical lens, including the Socio Ecological Model (SEM), Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), and feminist theory, was used to analyse and interpret the data generated in this study. Triangulation of theories created an opportunity to explore the data from various vantage points and to produce new perspectives. This added to the rigour of the study. Reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) revealed that women’s involvement in this programme was mostly due to the love for their communities and their desire to make a difference in these communities. Additionally, the findings revealed that the women were also motivated by their passion to help vulnerable people, particularly women and children. The initial and ongoing training contributed to both their personal and professional growth. The women pointed out the programme’s successes such as its ability to create safe spaces for children, enabling them to express themselves and build resilience. This paper reveals that the programme’s success is due to the combination of training that the women undergo with the indigenous knowledge system, which is a powerful weapon of resistance and transformation. The findings also indicated that beside the positive implementation of the programme, the women reported facing many challenges in their facilitation. The challenges include resource constraints, societal norms, and the persistent culture of violence in the community. These challenges highlight the need for collaborative partnerships among stakeholders, including schools, government agencies, and community organisations. I Protect Me (IPM) enabled the women to develop various strategies that they employ towards eradicating GBV in schools, with the added vision of extending their own learnings to empower other community members.
