Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Educating nurses on patient safety is thus essential, as they are at the forefront of patient care. Preparing nursing students with the necessary patient safety competencies requires nurse educators who are knowledgeable about patient safety and teaching and learning strategies to deliver patient safety education effectively. The study aimed to develop a framework for integrating patient safety education into the basic nursing curriculum. The study was conducted in three phases and sought to: 1. Explore and describe the understanding of patient safety and patient safety education among nursing students, nurse educators, and newly qualified registered nurses. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive, and contextual research design was used. 2. Use a scoping review to map and describe evidence of the most appropriate patient safety education content and teaching and learning strategies to include in the basic nursing curricula; 3. Develop a framework for integrating patient safety into basic nursing curricula, using a framework methodology and a self-developed tool for validating the framework. Results: The qualitative studies revealed that although patient safety is taught in basic nursing curricula, the content is scanty across modules and is taught more often during first and second years of study. Participants showed understanding of clinical components of patient safety education such as managing medical and medication errors. They seemed to understand non-technical patient safety skill such as communicating effectively within a team to ensure patient safety. A need was expressed to integrate patient safety education into the nursing curricula. Nurse educators showed limited knowledge about patient safety frameworks. The scoping review findings suggest that patient safety competencies such as quality improvement, informatics, and evidence-based practice are not adequately taught in the basic nursing curricula. The use of multiple teaching and learning strategies in academic and clinical settings need to be considered in teaching patient safety education. Data from the qualitative studies and the scoping review were used in developing the framework. The framework addressed essential steps for the successful integration of patient safety education into basic nursing curricula, namely: review of current curricula, developing learning areas, topics and domains, and identifying effective teaching and learning strategies. Following these steps, nurse educators must implement the content and the relevant teaching and learning strategies related to patient safety education. Nurse educators should be aware of factors that influence the integration of patient safety education into the curriculum, namely: curriculum issues, academic-clinical partnerships, environmental and human factors, and patient safety competencies. Conclusion: This study findings revealed that patient safety education is not fully integrated well in basic nursing curricula. The need for the developed framework that will guide nurse educators to successfully integrate patient safety education into basic nursing curricula is thus emphasised.
