Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/586c5319-09b6-41c2-ac4c-560badc9e95f ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines lyrical subjectivity and poetic consciousness in Breytenbach’s collections die na-dood (2016) and op weg na kû (2019). Lyrical subjectivity, and specifically the relationship between the lyrical “I” and the poet, is a disputed and widely discussed topic within lyrical theory. Since the publication of Breyten Breytenbach’s debut collection, the issue of subjectivity in his poetry has attracted extensive attention in literary criticism, especially due to the prominent presence of the “I”-speaker in many of his poems. Sabine Coelsch-Foisner (2002) developed a model for examining poetic consciousness in an effort to address this issue. However, it appears that subjectivity in Breytenbach’s work is more complex than current explanations can account for, as his poetry frequently explores the Buddhist notion of “the dissolution of the self” despite its apparent “I-centeredness.” Therefore, the Zen-Buddhist dimension of his work should also be considered. Coelsch-Foisner’s useful framework for understanding poetic consciousness is rooted in Western and Christian perspectives, however, it excludes the relevance of Zen. An alternative framework that reconciles Western and Eastern perspectives on subjectivity is thus required. This study explores the possibility that quantum theory may offer this bridging and supplementary perspective for analysing poetic consciousness and lyrical subjectivity in Breytenbach’s collections die na-dood (2016) and op weg na kû (2019), which have thus far received limited scholarly attention. Sabine Coelsch-Foisner’s (2002) typological model for categorizing poetry based on the manner in which poetic consciousness manifests, serves as a framework and approach for this study. Additionally, Karen Barad’s diffractive methodology is applied to triangulate Zen Buddhism and quantum theory with the lyrical theory of subjectivity. Barad’s diffractive methodology involves reading texts from disparate fields “through each other” to generate new insights. Moreover, Barad’s (2007) agential realism and her application of quantum theory to discursive practices, as well as Atmanspacher et al.’s (2002) weak quantum theory, provide insights into applying quantum theory to the humanities. In this study, I propose that the poem, as a discursive practice, may be viewed as a measuring instrument in which self and consciousness are measured when poetic consciousness intra-actively manifests in the voice of the poem. In this way, an agential cut is performed during the writing and reading of the poem, and the subject position is defined by the observation created through the non-local entanglement between poet and reader. When subjectivity is viewed in this way, the paradoxical views on the identity of the lyrical "I" are considered from an alternative perspective that can reconcile the differing perspectives.. These findings offer new interpretive possibilities through which subjectivity, consciousness, and several recurring metaphors in Breytenbach’s work may be viewed, with potential applications to his entire oeuvre. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie ondersoek die liriese subjektiwiteit en poëtiese bewussyn in Breytenbach se bundels die na-dood (2016) en op weg na kû (2019). Liriese subjektiwiteit en die verband tussen die liriese “ek” en die digter is ʼn omstrede en veelbesproke onderwerp binne die veld van die liriese teorie. Daarbenewens geniet die kwessie van subjektiwiteit in Breyten Breytenbach se poësie sedert sy debuutbundel baie aandag in die literêre kritiek, juis omdat die ek-spreker so prominent in baie van die gedigte figureer. Sabine Coelsch-Foisner (2002) ontwikkel ʼn model vir die bestudering van poëtiese bewussyn in ʼn poging om groter duidelikheid oor problematiek te kry. Subjektiwiteit in Breytenbach se werk is verder gekompliseer aangesien sy poësie dikwels die Boeddhistiese begrip van “die opheffing van die self” verken, ten spyte van die oënskynlike “ekkerigheid” daarvan. Daarom moet die Zen-Boeddhistiese dimensie van sy werk ook verreken word. Coelsch-Foisner se nuttige raamwerk vir die verstaan van poëtiese bewussyn is gesetel in Westerse en Christelike perspektiewe, maar sluit die relevansie van die Zenfilosofie uit. ’n Alternatiewe raamwerk wat Westerse en Oosterse perspektiewe op subjektiwiteit versoen, is dus nodig. Hierdie studie ondersoek die moontlikheid dat die kwantumteorie dalk hierdie oorbruggende en aanvullende perspektief kan bied vir die ontleding van poëtiese bewussyn en liriese subjektiwiteit in Breytenbach se bundels die na-dood (2016) en op weg na kû (2019), wat tot dusver beperkte akademiese aandag ontvang het. Sabine Coelsch-Foisner (2002) se tipologiese model vir die kategorisering van gedigte op grond van die wyse waarop die poëtiese bewussyn in gedigte na vore kom, dien as raamwerk en invalshoek vir hierdie studie. Verder word Karen Barad se diffraktiewe metodologie ingespan om die Zen-Boeddhisme en die kwantumteorie te trianguleer met die liriese teorie van subjektiwiteit. Barad se diffraktiewe metodologie hou in dat die tekste uit onverwante velde “deur mekaar” gelees word ten einde nuwe insigte te verkry. Verder bied Barad (2007) se agentgebaseerde realisme en die toepassing van die kwantumteorie op diskursiewe praktyke asook Atmansphacher et al. (2002) se swak kwantumteorie insigte in die toepassing van die kwantumteorie op die geesteswetenskappe. In hierdie studie stel ek voor dat die gedig, as diskursiewe praktyk, na aanleiding van die kwantumteorie as meetinstrument beskou kan word. Hierin word die self en bewussyn gemeet wanneer die poëtiese bewussyn intra-aktief manifesteer in die stem van die gedig. Sodoende word ʼn agentgebaseerde snit uitgevoer tydens die skryf en die lees van die gedig en word die subjekposisie vasgestel deur die waarneming wat deur die nie-lokale verstrengeling tussen digter en leser gemaak word. Wanneer subjektiwiteit op hierdie manier beskou word, word die paradoksale opvattings oor die identiteit van die liriese ek vanuit ʼn alternatiewe perspektief beskou wat versoenend kan optree tussen die verskillende perspektiewe daarop. Verder bied dit ook ʼn interpretasieraamwerk vir vele van Breytenbach se besinnings oor die bewussyn. Hierdie bevindings bied nuwe interpretasiemoontlikhede waarmee subjektiwiteit, bewussyn en ook verskeie herhalende metafore in Breytenbach se werk beskou kan word en terugwerkend op sy hele oeuvre toegepas kan word.
