Guided by the research question, “What are the common perceptions of the role of Christian spiritual care in the rehabilitation of incarcerated youth in Hawequa Correctional Centre?”, the study explored the lived experiences of Christian incarcerated youth, correctional officials and Christian spiritual care workers. Objectives included assessing perceptions of spiritual needs, examining current Christian rehabilitation interventions, and evaluating stakeholder perspectives on the effectiveness of spiritual care services and programmes. Public perceptions in South-Africa are that correctional centres are “universities of crime”and to be in a correctional centre should be punishment. For society the punishment motive is predominant and rehabilitation is perceived to be secondary. Spiritual care approach engages with incarcerated persons with the goal to transform them in their humanity and dignity. Studies reveal that participation in spiritual care activities could contribute to behavioural change and reduce criminal behaviour amongst incarcerated persons. People from various backgrounds and walks of life are found in correctional centres. They need redemption and hope and Christian spiritual care can help to change attitudes and behaviours of incarcerated persons, especially young people who are in correctional centres. The focus of this research study is on the role of Christian spiritual care in the rehabilitation of incarcerated youth between the age of 21-25 years old in Hawequa Correctional Centre. The researcher utilized the qualitative methodology research method and focused on Hawequa Correctional Centre to gather new insights from the data towards exploring the lived experiences of incarcerated persons. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as the primary tool for data collection as it provides flexibility in exploring participant’s experiences. Research findings indicate that Christian spiritual care is perceived as a vital aspect of rehabilitation, fostering moral regeneration, self-reflection, and a sense of identity among incarcerated youth. The study concludes that spiritual care is essential for holistic rehabilitation, functioning not merely as an adjunct to correctional programs but as a transformative approach that meets incarcerated youth's spiritual, moral, emotional needs, focusing on identity, morality and faith.
