ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Innovation is often regarded as one of the key activities contributing to economic and societal development and growth. However, the marginalised tend to be excluded from mainstream innovations, contributing to increased inequality. Innovation for inclusive development (I4ID) aims to address these inequalities by reducing the exclusion of the marginalised and improving their living conditions. Although the aim of I4ID is to include the marginalised in the development of innovation processes, I4ID projects or interventions often fail or fail to produce significantly improved social outcomes. Various innovation for inclusive development systems (I4IDSs) have been analysed us- ing the innovation systems (ISs) framework, which has become a popular approach for analysing innovations from a systems perspective. An abundance of research has been dedicated to studying the performance of I4IDSs using the event history analy- sis (EHA) approach to analyse the temporal fulfilment of the functions and processes required for the development, diffusion, and adoption of innovation. However, limited focus has been placed on the involvement of the actors. Actors are central to I4IDSs, and an enhanced understanding of their dynamics and involvement in innovation activi- ties could result in improved outcomes. Since actors are particular to projects or case studies, role theory is employed, and actors are classified according to the roles they portray in order to enable cross-case study comparisons and generalise the derived insights. In this study, a methodological process for generating actor-specific insights in an I4IDS is proposed as a conceptual framework through the application of the design science research as a methodology process model. The conceptual framework is primarily constructed by integrating a functional IS process tracing approach, EHA, and role theory. Three iterative demonstration-evaluation-development cycles are employed in this study to develop the conceptual framework and two complementary auxiliary tools. The first two episodes are applied to two real-world educational community intervention case studies. Thereafter, semi-structured interviews are conducted with subject matter experts who evaluate and validate the conceptual framework. The final conceptual framework is presented as implementation guidelines, together with the two auxiliary tools which automate, simplify, and expedite multiple steps in the conceptual framework to increase its accessibility and usability. The actor-related insights generated by implementing the final conceptual framework and auxiliary tools prove the value and usefulness of incorporating role theory with the integrated EHA approach to analyse I4ID projects. Additionally, the practical contribu- tion of this study enables researchers or project implementers to learn from previously implemented projects and enhance their understanding of I4ID contexts.
