Since the advent of democracy, the government has devised a range of initiatives to reduce the scourge of youth unemployment. These interventions include the Youth Employment Accord, National Youth Service, Expanded Public Works, and Graduate Internship Programme. This study focused on the Graduate Internship Programme (GIP) as one of these interventions and looked at its value in public sector organisations. Owing to the vast nature of the public sector in South Africa, the study focused on the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Within the South African context, internships are implemented according to national government directives, and this application must be consistent with all the laws of the Republic, especially the country's Constitution. In addition to general legislation internships are tailored according to departmental policies. The study undertook a comprehensive literature review, which captures theories upon which internship is anchored and traversed varied points of view of different scholars who have opined about internships at a local and international level. The study employed a qualitative research methodology and design. An online survey was used during the field study, and electronic questionnaires were sent to all the interns in the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. The field study only commenced after obtaining the requisite ethical clearance for social research. These interns are either based at the head office in Pretoria or at different regional offices spread throughout the country. Out of a total of 68 interns, 45 completed the survey, this represents a 66.18% participation rate. The research findings indicated that the internship programme in the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is implemented according to various legislation and policies including the Step-by-Step Guide on Internship, Human Resources Development Strategy, Labor Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and other legislative pieces in South Africa. Furthermore, the study illustrated that internships are a measure to reduce unemployment, and the graduate internship programme is very valuable to graduate interns. The graduate interns were allocated tasks in line with their fields of study, and mentors were allocated to them. The study concludes by making certain recommendations that are aimed at enhancing the value of graduate internships in public sector organisations. The study recommends the following: interns should not occupy permanent vacant posts during their internship, adequate tools of trade should be allocated to them, they should rotate between different departments, and mentors should be continuously trained.
