This study explored the Afro-sentiment on radio news bulletins on five radio stations at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), focusing on how African news was presented over a two-week period on 5FM, Metro FM, Radio 2000, RSG and SAfm, by quantitatively and qualitatively analysing African news stories, as well as holding semi-structured interviews with gatekeepers at the SABC. Due to the varied needs of the study, it was conducted under a pragmatic umbrella, as it not only incorporated mixed methods for the different levels of analysis and semi-structured interviews, but also steered the research by utilising three varying theories, namely framing theory, gatekeeping theory and news values, to explore representation, content, as well as news selection processes, as it was believed that all three need to be understood, to understand the Afro-pessimism phenomena. The study found that the SABC broadcasts a balanced offering of African news when compared to previous studies, but that there was a high reliance on external news wires representative of elite nations like the BBC and Reuters, mostly due to a lack of proper physical resources and human resources. Additionally, the study found that much of SABC radio’s African news content presents elements that are considered to contribute to Afro-pessimism, and a small unit was found to contribute consistently to stereotyping of failure, reliance on elite nations, and negativity about future prospects. Other findings were that the SABC gatekeepers held a high awareness of continental relevance, and that they relied on a unique set of news values.
