Often, business risk is confined to the fields of Business Administration and Economics; however, as social, and socio-political dimensions of risk are increasingly acknowledged, a redirected focus towards mitigation strategies founded in Political Sciences is necessitated. This study explores the role of Social License to Operate (SLO) in the Mining and Extractive Industry, its application, and its function in emergent social risks, of these emergent risks, a community's resistance to mining motivates serious risks to business operations such as protests, demonstrations, strikes, and sabotage efforts. At the core of this study is the question of how SLO can be used to mitigate community risk in the Mining and Extractive Industry, in South Africa. The South African mining landscape is inherently political and defined by power relations. Political Ecology serves as a theoretical lens to examine the power-laden nature of company-community relations in this landscape. The Marikana Massacre that occurred in August 2012 is the case study chosen to undertake this study's analysis. This study finds that the complexity of community risk can be mitigated by the necessary alignment of company-community relations and continual engagement which results in SLO. A social risk orientated approach to business operations that places SLO at its core provides companies with the tool to redefine their relationship with communities and mitigate risk.
