Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/49f83453-999f-4021-abe8-5341b0a81438 ENGLISH ABSTRACT: György Sándor’s seminal text, On Piano Playing (1981) serves as a starting point to explore advanced technical foundations embedded in piano beginners’ books. The work is applied to students between ages four to eleven and measured against developmental theories by Jean Piaget. Four widely-used beginners’ courses were selected: Bastien Piano Basics by J. Bastien, Piano Adventures by N. Faber & R. Faber, Alfred’s Basic Piano Library by W. Palmer et al., and Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course by J. Thompson. The primers were divided into three different experience levels to ensure uniformity in comparisons. The analysis demonstrates how readily available primers are well suited to introducing the five technical patterns codified by Sándor: free fall; five-finger patterns: scales and arpeggios; rotation; staccato; and thrust. These techniques are gradually introduced across multiple experience levels. The findings reinforce the critical role of teachers, who must not only introduce students to the correct techniques but guide them in their proper physical execution through imaginative, child-centred pedagogy. While most pianists only encounter Sándor’s techniques during advanced formal training, incorporation of his motion patterns into foundational pedagogy offers enormous developmental benefits to students. This research aims to offer teachers a path into incorporating Sándor’s work into this sophisticated and rich phase of piano teaching. Die fokus val op leerders tussen die ouderdom van vier en elf, en word onderskryf deur ontwikkelingsteorieë van Jean Piaget. Vier beginnersreekse wat in algemene gebruik staan is geselekteer: Bastien Piano Basics deur J. Bastien, Piano Adventures deur Faber & Faber, Alfred’s Basic Piano Library deur Palmer et al., en Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course deur J. Thompson. Hierdie reekse is verder onderverdeel in drie ervaringsvlakke om eenvormigheid in vergelykings te verseker. Die studie demonstreer hoe algemeen beskikbare beginnersboeke goed aangepas is om Sándor se vyf tegniese patrone (vryval, vyfvinger patrone: toonlere en arpeggios, rotasie, en stukrag) in studente se onderrig te integreer. Die tegnieke word stelselmatig oor verskillende ervaringsvlakke bekend gestel. Die kritiese rol vir die onderwyser om die leerder aan die korrekte tegnieke (met korrekte fisiese uitvoering daarvan) bekend te stel word deurgaans duidelik. Dit kan slegs suksesvol deur verbeeldingryke, kind-gesentreerde pedagogie bereik word. Terwyl meeste pianiste Sándor se tegniek eers tydens gevorderde opleiding bestudeer, bied die insluiting van hierdie konsepte tydens die eerste fase van onderrig reuse voordele vir die pianis se ontwikkeling.
