The aim of the study is to determine the migration patterns and characteristics to Grabouw’s informal settlements. The study distinguished between two different migration patterns occurring in Grabouw, including: 1) people not born in Grabouw but who migrated there, and 2) people who are considering migrating in the future. The data for this study was extracted from two dataset. Firstly, the Census 2011 data was extracted by cross-tabulating the people who migrated to Grabouw with their socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics, and the housing and service-delivery conditions within which they stay. The results from the Census data are used to contextualise migration patterns to Grabouw in general for people who have migrated to the different suburbs by the time that the Census 2011 data was collected. The second phase of the data collection for this thesis involved obtaining primary survey data that was collected by a multi-stakeholder initiative driven by the Departments of Sociology and Anthropology, and Geography and Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University. The findings show that migration patterns for both migrants in Grabouw are caused by employment opportunities. Educational attainment among both migrants is predominantly secondary level, indicating that most people in Grabouw have not pursued tertiary education. This is reflected in their employment, as a significant number are employed as full-time farmworkers, which is consistent with their income range of R4,001 to R8,000. The connection between education level and lower-income occupations, such as farmwork, is evident in this population. The main implication is that the local government should invest in important sectors such as tourism, Agri-processing, and agriculture to support local economic growth which will led to employment opportunities in Grabouw.
