Prompted by my own lived experience of my family moving back and forth between Kenya and South Africa, this study explores notions of dual-nationality and the resulting complexity of living between two countries and cultures. In my practice, I employ drawing processes, photography and printmaking to find ways of articulating the simultaneous acts of remembering and forgetting. This research draws from Homi Bhabha’s third space theory and concepts of cultural hybridity as outlined in his text Location of Culture. His insights lay the groundwork for my understanding of the tie between my sense of identity and my familial diaspora. I discuss and refer to these concepts in my work and that of other visual artists such as Akosua Owusu, Priya Kambli, Otobong Nkanga. and Luyanda Zindela. I also refer to Marianne Hirsch’s writing in her work Family Frames and that of Annette Kuhn in her text Family Secrets. References are also made to theories by Nicholas Mirzoeff, Stuart Hall, and Elizabeth Edwards as they provide a conceptual framework to discuss my practice-based research.
