Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/b12f8c8d-061e-4ee0-ab37-d171164a125b ENGLISH SUMMARY: Background: The cancellation of elective surgical procedures is a global problem that challenges both the surgical team and patients booked for elective surgical procedures. This study explored the experiences of surgical team on the cancellation of elective surgical procedures in a regional hospital in the Eastern Cape. Research question: The study was guided by the question ‘’What are the experiences of surgical team on the cancellation of elective surgical procedures? Research aim and objectives: The aim of the study was to explore experiences of surgical team on the cancellation of elective surgical procedures. The objectives of this study were to gain an understanding of the experiences of surgical team on the cancellation of elective surgical procedures, specifically to gain insight on the cancellation of the elective surgical procedures in operating rooms, to explore effective use of resources in the operating room, to determine challenges that arise due to the cancellation of elective surgical procedures and to explore solutions to address the cancellation of elective procedures. Methods: An exploratory-descriptive qualitative design was used to explore the experiences of surgical team members on the cancellation of the elective surgical procedures. Through purposive sampling, participants who were able to provide in-depth data about the purpose of the study were selected, and data was collected through semi-structured individual interviews. Results: The study found that the cancellation of elective surgical procedures had a great impact on the surgical team, including demotivation, missing out on learning opportunities, frustration and physical exhaustion. Among other reasons of the cancellations is the shortage of staff of both doctors and nurses. Staff described feeling exhausted which added risks of absenteeism and leaving the institution. Participant explained how the cancellation of elective surgical procedures further constrained resources, which may lead to compromised patient safety and further complicate organisational management in the operating room. Conclusion: The study findings revealed the experiences of the surgical team on the cancellation of elective surgical procedures, who described various related challenges which may effect organisational management, surgical resources and safe perioperative patient care. The surgical team experiences low work satisfaction when elective surgeries are cancelled, including staff demotivation, missed learning opportunities, reduced social engagement due to constantly shifting work plans, conflict due to limited available theatre time, frustration and physical exhaution.
