Climate-sensitive diseases pose a threat to the well-being of children. These diseases limit their growth and development and have a negative impact on their overall health. Aim: To determine the impact of climate change on children attending primary care in Isiolo County, Northern Kenya. Methods: Convergent mixed methods research design. Quantitative data on climate variability and disease patterns was collected over the last 5-years and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. These included rainfall and temperature averages, malnutrition, diarrheal diseases and respiratory disease rates. Qualitative data from 12 interviews of parents with children under 5 years and six interviews of healthcare workers were analysed with Atlas-ti using the framework method. Results: The county experienced climate fluctuation between 2019 and 2023, characterized by reduced rainfall, high temperatures, a low vegetation index, food insecurity, and reduced access to water sources. However, flash floods were experienced in 2023. Families were vulnerable to the effects of these climate shocks and stressors due to poverty and limited financial resources. Primary care services were already of low quality and lacked resilience. Healthcare workers reported limited essential equipment and medical resources, healthcare worker shortages, overcrowding in hospitals and destruction of hospital infrastructure. As a result a number of health and social effects were reported. Parents reported outbreaks of diseases, including malaria, pneumonia, diarrheal diseases and mental health illnesses. Social effects included displacement, child neglect, and disruption to educational activities. Conclusions: Climate change has had a substantial impact on children’s health and social circumstances. The families that are dependent on the public sector health services are vulnerable and lack the resilience needed to cope with climate shocks and stressors. The health facilities and services also lack the resilience needed to respond adequately to the challenges of climate change. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar.
