The use of established diagnostic labels fails to consider culturally appropriate explanatory models and labels outside of a biomedical perspective. This is concerning, given that different cultures conceptualise mental health differently. Furthermore, in South Africa, there is a high prevalence of depression among this population. In South Africa, majority of Black and Coloured individuals still reside in poverty and are subjected to socioeconomic inequalities, which render them a vulnerable group. Therefore, Coloured individuals, particularly the adolescents of this population, are at risk for depression. Adolescents’ vulnerability is attributed to the country’s socioeconomic state and the critical developmental period they undergo. Within this population, males are particularly at risk for depression, and this depression is likely to worsen due to existing hegemonic masculinity norms that prevent them from seeking help or treatment. As a result, these males endorse maladaptive coping strategies to cope with depression. Subsequently, this may lead to suicide. Despite the vulnerability of Coloured adolescent males to depression and suicide, there is a lack of research on their experiences and conceptualisations of depression. Therefore, this research project aims to understand how Coloured adolescent males understand and think about depression.
