In developing countries such as Malawi where poverty is rampant, inadequate accessibility presents an additional barrier to socioeconomic activities for many individuals, particularly women. Accessibility is closely linked to socioeconomic empowerment, as it enables individuals to have an adequate standard of living. Improved livelihoods accommodate increased productivity and contribute to broader economic development. However, research shows that women, more so in developing countries in the global south, face disproportionate challenges in accessing transport, limiting their participation in key socioeconomic activities including education, income-generating activities, and healthcare. With women forming nearly half of most populations around the world, sustainable economic development is unattainable without addressing inequities. This study investigated women’s accessibility to socioeconomic activities in Blantyre City, one of four urban centres in Malawi, located in the Southern Region. Using primary data collected through an online survey and supported by secondary data sources, the study employed statistical analyses to prove that the access to transport facilities is a barrier to socioeconomic inclusion. The findings show that women in Blantyre are significantly less empowered than men. These results shed light on the gendered nature of mobility in urban Malawi. They emphasise the critical role of equitable transport planning to close empowerment gaps. Based on data, the study offers policy recommendations aimed at promoting a more inclusive transport sector that enhances women’s access to education, income-generating activities, and healthcare, thereby endorsing their overall socioeconomic empowerment and eradicating transport-related social exclusion.
