As such, logistics companies will seek to locate their facilities in the areas that are best suited to them. Previous research has found similar patterns in many cities and regions around the world, including in particular that logistics facilities are tending to move away from CBDs with their high costs and high congestion levels, and tending to locate instead in further outlying areas of cities. Most prior research has been focused on developed nations, and this research seeks to fill a gap by focusing on the Western Cape province of South Africa, centred on Cape Town, by far its largest city. This research uses spatial tax data from the South African Revenue Service to analyse the level of presence of the logistics sector in the various locations across the Western Cape and tracks the movement between locations and the disparity in levels of growth of the logistics sector in different areas. This is compared to the rest of the economy, and the location of the population. Statistical analysis is performed on the results of surveys of logistics professionals in order to understand the levels of importance of the different factors that influence their locations and to gauge their levels of satisfaction regarding these factors. Results of the analysis show that logistics activity is overwhelmingly located within the Cape Town metropolitan area, and disproportionately so compared to other sectors and the province’s population, but between 2014 and 2023 there has been a proportional increase in logistics facilities been located outside of the metro. Logistics professionals consider access to highways, proximity to customers, and avoiding congestion to be the most important variables regarding their location, and there was a strong correlation between the level of importance and the level of satisfaction of a factor, indicating a sector that is settled with its location.
