They have several shortcomings in their conceptualisations of outsideness. The social geographic context of this inquiry is the coastal Greater Hermanus Area of the Overstrand Local Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa. This investigation addresses these limitations by expanding Relph’s Outsider and the societal stratifications he considered. Specific stratifications are closely related to the legacies of apartheid in South Africa, while others are non-related. The investigation makes further conceptual additions to outsideness and Relph’s Outsider. These include the interrelatedness of Outsider stratifications, root causes thereof, the dialectic relationship between outsideness and social capital, how people are differentially positioned in time, space and place, the ‘instability’, spatial context-specific and the dynamic nature of The Outsider. Immigrants who do not necessarily intend to or prioritise social engagement is another significant finding, as it challenges the prevailing discourse on migration and length of residence. This investigation further adds the ‘phases’ of Outsiders over time. The research proves that language is marginally relevant but that the ‘correct’ and ‘polite’ use of language is significant in creating outsideness and socioeconomic opportunities. Lastly, the thesis illustrates how outsideness and lower social capital reinforce power dynamics. An improved understanding of who the Outsiders in communities are becomes critical for various stakeholder organisations, including local government departments, NGOs (non-government organisations), CBOs (community-based organisations), and religious organisations, to be more effective and efficient with their developmental and investment efforts. As social capital also functions at a collective level, a better understanding of outsideness would have a broader societal benefit.
