During this development, progress has been made in particular in the metalexicography and practical lexicography for the establishment of both models for usable lexicographic products, as well as various functional printed reference works. As technology advances and people rely more and more on digital mediums, the lexicographic focus shifts gradually to electronic products, especially to online and mobile tools. The shift to the electronic sphere does however create certain problems for modern lexicography. There is currently no established theory for the development of electronic lexicographic products. This means that existing theories for printed lexicographic products, as well as principles of other related disciplines, must be adapted for the development and evaluation of electronic lexicographic products. The theoretical shortcomings in electronic lexicography with regard to (online) lexicographic products on mobile devices, create an opportunity for the development of a theoretical, yet practically applicable, framework. In the digital era, the mobile phone has become a primary information source, and the relationship between people and mobile technology is closer than ever before. The ubiquitousness of information tools, especially mobile phones, cannot be ignored by lexicographers. The mobile phone as lexicographically orientated device should enjoy attention in the lexicographic discourse. There is, however, a paradox. Numerous mobile lexicographic products have been produced, but these products are not necessarily grounded in metalexicographic theory. In contrast, it appears that metalexicography does not always have the appreciation for or interest in mobile lexicography. This study therefore aims to establish a metalexicographic and partly interdisciplinary theoretical model for the development and design of lexicographic products on mobile phones. The mobile dictionary model that has been developed in this study, proposes certain criteria for the production and evaluation of lexicographic products on mobile devices, especially mobile phones. This model is mainly based on metalexicographic principles, especially those of the Function Theory and the General Theory of Lexicography, while aspects of the lexicographic practice, as well as related disciplines such as, inter alia, usability, interaction design and human-centred design, are also integrated throughout. The characteristics of mobile phones and their typical usage situations, their types of users, and the types of products produced for them, are considered from a lexicographic perspective and form the basis of the model. Those responsible for the production of these products are also investigated. The set of criteria presented here is not necessarily exhaustive and permanent. The nature of a model that focuses on ever-changing technology, supposes that aspects thereof should be changed continuously. Ultimately, this model aims to fill a gap in the theoretical electronic lexicography and should be considered as a foundation for other similar lexicographic models.
