ENGLISH SUMMARY: This study focuses on the relational construct between faith and witness in the Reformed confessional church tradition and attempts to provide an answer to the question: How are the religious beliefs in the church tradition shaped? The study shows that there is an inseparable and reciprocal relationship between faith (doctrine) and witness (life) in the tradition. In fact, the study demonstrates that this inseparable connection and reciprocal impact have been true since time immemorial to the lex orandi (liturgy), lex credendi (doctrine), lex vivendi (life), and the maxim lex convivendi (living together), which was added more recently. The tradition emphasizes the public nature of the faith and expresses its beliefs in confessions; it sees itself as a confessional tradition. The tradition does not view its confessions as inerrant or infallible, but as fallible human interpretations open to correction by Scripture. As a researcher, I particularly relied on Barth and Smit to argue for the inseparable connection between faith and witness. The ecclesia reformata semper reformanda secundum Verbum Dei as hermeneutical (understanding) key articulates the habit of the Reformed mindset to be self-critical of its own tradition. This study argues that the relevance of the close relationship of faith and witness in this church tradition compels individual believers and the church to visibly embody their beliefs. Those belonging to the tradition have the responsibility to live out their faith publicly and to become actively involved in the transformation of both church organization and societal structures. The connectedness of faith and witness in this study highlights its ongoing positive impact and transformation in all the contexts of life. The study further argues that the doctrine of justification (freedom) as articulated in the fivefold sola formulas provide the hermeneutical keys for a better understanding of the inseparable relationship between faith and witness. The Christian freedom that is gained through the grace of and faith in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit must move believers and the church to live by grace and faith and to visibly embody it in all life contexts. Jesus Christ, as Mediator, is both the content (substance) and the measure of the church's confession and witness. Scripture is the normative testimony of the revelation of God in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit, to which the confession and witness of the church must be continually subjected or tested. The existence, function, and witness of the church are centred on and directed to the honour and glory of God. The study emphasizes that the tradition expresses its religious beliefs in ecclesiology, church government, church law and order, and the liturgy. However, the shaping is not limited to the ecclesiological formation but must also include public life and living together in all social contexts. The liturgy in worship must also become the liturgy of life and coexistence with one another.
