This study follows the experiences of 10 young black men who grew up in the township. I will engage with young black men living in Langa who are exploring what it means to be a man in the context of having been a target of violence and how this experience might affect one’s masculine ideal in a contemporary setting that remains embedded in traditional social and cultural gender norms such as townships. The focus of this study is, therefore, on those who have been targets of violence and not those who have perpetrated the violence however it will also look at the relationship between young men who have been targets of violence and those who have perpetrated acts of violence to challenge the often static categories of victim and perpetrator by looking at how young men can be both as a consequence of their understanding of how they should position themselves as men in a patriarchal society. Semi-structured interviews were employed as the primary data collection tool in this study, allowing multiple subjective opinions to emerge. The study will apply a thematic analysis coupled with an intersectional approach as tools to analyse the interviews. In the context of a black South African township, however, currently we know relatively little about how young black boys construct their masculine identities, what motivates them, and how they feel about their masculinities, especially alternative forms of masculinity. Together with how masculinities are constructed, therefore, in this study I also seek to listen for voices of alternative masculinities - those that are non-risk taking, non-sexist and not harmful to self and others. As points of entry into the extensive and broad theoretical discussions, I discuss male-on-male violence, the experiences of young black men as targets of violence and how these experiences affect them as they grow older. One of this study’s main aims is to create new knowledge in how men construct their masculinities when faced with an everyday threat of violence and how they navigate this in relation to their desired masculine status. This study will also focus on how these young black men find healing within the township. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar nie.
