This study examines the representation of the visual artist characters in her work with a focus on gender issues. The development of her focus on gender issues is analysed to determine whether the artist characters she represents, are connected to a society where gender roles are blurring and the spectrum of gender identities continues to unfold. The representation of the visual artist characters is examined against the background of South Africa’s socio-economic and political landscape as well as the international art environment. Because of the historical layering of Winterbach’s work, history often figures as a frame of reference. In chapter 2 the concept of gender is examined with reference to the theoretical concepts of subjectivity, corporeality and intersectionality. Subjectivity is viewed from a feminist perspective, particularly where it integrates with work by the French philosopher Michel Foucault. The intersection between Foucault and feminism with regards to corporeality and power is the focus of this study. It is complemented by the ideas of the French feminist Hélène Cixous who considers the body as a reference point for writing and sees the body as a social construct. The visual artist characters are studied within relationships and social structures, the role of the corporeal as determined by cultural codes and norms as well as power. The way in which it plays out in the context of the novels serves as a starting point. The role of the corporeal is addressed with reference to Elizabeth Grosz’s theorisation of the inscriptive body and the lived body. Due to the variety of characters, Kimberlé Crenshaw’s understanding of intersectionality is used to point to multiple discrimination. Lastly, the influence of trauma is explored because of the variety of characters that suffer from distressing experiences. Chapter 3 is an analysis of the representation of the female visual artist characters. The focus is on the male-centeredness of society, the relationship between commercial success and recognition, the role of corporeality and the influence of trauma, as well as the issue of intersectionality. In chapter 4 the representation of the male visual artist characters is examined. Here the focus again falls on the male-centeredness of society, the relationship between recognition and commercial success and the influence of trauma; in addition, the influence of the heteronormative society on the older male artist as well as the representation of different gender identities are also explored. Chapter 5 focuses on the shift from female visual artists to male visual artists over the course of Ingrid Winterbach’s oeuvre. In addition, other role players in the arts environment are examined with reference to gender representation and how it can be linked to conditions in the South African and international arts environments. The final section addresses the role that the myth of the old master plays in Winterbach’s oeuvre. Chapter 6 concludes the study.
