There are large numbers of Zimbabwean migrants residing in South Africa who need to apply for permits for different work categories to qualify for either temporary or permanent residence status. Each visa has a set of different prerequisites that need to be adhered to, to ensure their stay in South Africa. Many foreign-born migrants who transition to South Africa, are well-educated working professionals in search of better living conditions by expanding their expertise. In order to mitigate skills shortages in the country, the South African state implemented the Critical Skills visa with the aim of alleviating skills shortages by employing skilled migrant workers who had the skills and expertise to occupy these positions. The prescription for this visa, however, specifies that not all working migrants can access this special permit, as it is only accessible to migrants who work in specifically defined scarcely skilled occupations such as managers, professionals and artisans. The aim of this study is to examine the experiences of Zimbabwean migrants who qualify for critical skills visas, specifically focusing on their motivations for choosing South Africa as a destination, as well as the challenges they encounter during the application process of the visa. This is achieved by exploring several factors which include complex visa requirements, slow service delivery and limited access to information in mitigating the crisis of the visa application process. Moreover, the study is concerned with understanding the strategies that they employ to overcome these challenges. This paper aims to create an understanding of the resilience of Zimbabwean migrants in navigating South Africa’s immigration policies as well as trying to establish new lives abroad.
