Despite growing interest in motivational approaches, the extent, range and nature of research applying Self-Determination Theory (SDT) - autonomy, competence, and relatedness - as a framework linking self-determined motivation to musicians’ optimal performance and occupational well-being has not been comprehensively mapped. This scoping review therefore aimed to investigate the existing peer-reviewed literature on SDT in relation to musicians’ optimal performance and occupational well-being, in order to better understand how self-determined motivation optimises musicians’ performance as well as occupational well-being. Structured searches were conducted across relevant major bibliographic databases; records were screened against predefined eligibility inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 907 records were initially identified. After de-duplication, title-abstract screening, and full-text screening, 14 studies were eligible for inclusion. The key findings on the role of self-determined motivation in enabling musicians to achieve optimal performance as well as optimal occupational well-being, can be summarised as follows: autonomy-supportive climates and high-quality teacher-student interactions are associated with internalisation, effective self-regulation, and purposeful practice; satisfaction of basic psychological needs aligns with resilience, vitality, flow, and sustained engagement, supporting conditions for optimal performance; controlling climates and need-thwarting contexts correspond with vulnerability to ill-being (e.g. anxiety, exhaustion) and compromised performance; the quality of motivation along the SDT continuum - autonomous versus controlled - determines whether persistence leads to flourishing or burnout; the salience of autonomy, competence, and relatedness shifts across career stages, from formative training to professional and elite contexts; performance and well-being are not competing goals but mutually reinforcing when psychological needs are supported. The practical contribution of this study lies in clarifying the role of SDT in enabling musicians to achieve both optimal performance and optimal occupational well-being. The insights from this thesis chart a pathway toward healthier, more resilient, and more fulfilling musical careers. Its scholarly contribution lies in consolidating a fragmented body of literature and positioning SDT as a central framework for future research on music performance science.
