Improving manufacturing activity is, therefore, one way to economic development, especially in developing countries. The African Union prioritises manufacturing and industrial development as key drivers for economic transformation and growth in their development blueprint, Agenda 2063. Contract manufacturing is an opportunity that developing countries can take to stimulate manufacturing activity. Contract manufacturing is when brand owners outsource the production of some or all of their products to a third party manufacturer. Well functioning contract manufacturing companies offer several benefits to brand owners and can lead to more brands on the market without the brand owners investing in manufacturing facilities and capacity. This increases manufacturing activity and ultimately industrial and economic development. In South Africa several leading contract manufacturing companies have failed in recent years for various reasons. There is an opportunity to increase contract manufacturing capacity to attract global brands, given South Africa’s leading economic position in Africa. A review of literature showed that there are no frameworks, models or guides that have been developed from critical success factors for contract manufacturing or manufacturing outsourcing in the consumer products supply chain. This research aimed to close that gap in literature by developing a critical success factors framework and management guide to assist aspiring and existing contract manufacturing companies to achieve sustainable success as strategic partners in the brand owners’ supply chain. The framework and management guide’s development process was guided by the design science research methodology. The data collection was done through a literature review and a two round Delphi study with experts in contract manufacturing to identify the critical success factors for manufacturing outsourcing and contract manufacturing. The success factors that emerged were the main inputs into the conceptual framework design. The conceptual framework included guidance on the implementation of the success factors as well as ranking of the critical success factors for prioritizing implementation. The framework and management guide were tested, validated and refined in four contract manufacturing companies in South Africa. The results of this demonstration were the development of the final framework and management guide assisting contract manufacturing companies achieve sustainable success. The novelty of this research is that it developed the first critical success factors framework and management guide to address the unique needs of contract manufacturing companies. It had inputs from academia (literature reviews and peer reviews of this research’s articles prior to publication in journals) and industry (experts on contract manufacturing representing brand owners, and the management and staff at contract manufacturing companies). This research contributes to research and literature on manufacturing outsourcing and contract manufacturing and has practical applications in the manufacturing industry.
