Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/871c11d8-5a25-454e-9d29-83e9538e7e9a ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study examines the history of the Lemba people of Mberengwa, Zimbabwe, from 1931-2024, focusing on how they have negotiated their identity, preserved their culture, and transformed in the midst of the evolving socio-political landscape. It moves past origin and identity debates to analysing how the colonial system, missionary influence, the economic crises in Zimbabwe and post-independence structures transformed their traditions and way of life. Using qualitative methods, like archival research, newspaper articles, and interviews with Lemba elders, youth, and leaders, this research examines the themes of syncretism, and adaptation. The key findings in this study show how the Lemba navigated different pressures through economic diversification, changing of ritual times and processes, and political representation, while also facing internal pressures such as the disengagement of youth and intermarriages. Thus, this study contributes to the discussions of minority histories, cultural hybridity and transformation in post-colonial Africa, focusing on the localised experiences faced by a minority group, the Lemba, in the southern parts of Zimbabwe.
