This study investigated mothers’ views on paternal perinatal depression, and specifically how it affects the family, father-child attachment and overall child development. Using a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews and a focus group were conducted with mothers to understand their perceptions and insights. The findings showed that fathers with paternal perinatal depression frequently face challenges balancing their different roles and responsibilities, which can lead to emotional withdrawal and difficulties within the family. Reduced interaction between fathers and their children was identified by participants as a significant concern as it disrupts the bonding process and hinders the child’s development. The participants highlighted that fathers’ mental health is often overlooked in society and within families, stressing the importance for increased awareness and support. By using Bowlby’s attachment theory, the study illustrated how paternal depression can disrupt the bonding process that is essential to a child’s growth. This study highlights the importance of understanding men’s paternal health and stresses the need for paternal support in the perinatal period. Addressing paternal perinatal depression can improve fathers’ mental health and improve family relationships, which in turn benefits the well-being of both children and partners.
