Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/8a9d9fce-05e2-4510-b332-2b4e882f4b0a ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the transformation of organ music in the 20th and 21st centuries, with a particular focus on the influence of contemporary musical idioms such as jazz on Western organ composition styles. The traditional boundaries between art music and popular genres have increasingly blurred, opening new stylistic possibilities for composition and influencing both the design and use of the organ. Although historically associated with the church and classical tradition, the organ is now frequently used in non-liturgical contexts, demonstrating its versatility and ongoing relevance in contemporary musical practice. The dissertation focuses on two works by South African composer Surendran Reddy (1962–2010), namely the Toccata for Madiba (1997) and Mayibuye Suite (2001), in which classical and jazz elements are uniquely integrated. Traditional analytical frameworks for classical music prove inadequate in fully capturing this stylistic synthesis; therefore, a tailored analytical framework has been developed to categorise both international and South African jazz styles and to identify their manifestation in Reddy’s compositions. This framework facilitates a critical examination of Reddy’s aesthetic vision and the role of jazz-style elements in performance practice. The study contributes to a broader understanding of the organ as a dynamic medium within both global and South African musical contexts. In the absence of complete performance instructions in his organ works, Reddy thus creates space for the performer to also act as a co-creative agent in realising the music’s aesthetic and political dimensions. The performer’s mandate is not merely limited to reproducing the notated score, but they are granted some freedom to internalise and articulate the stylistic register, cultural contexts, and historical resonances in their interpretation.
