Specifically, it examines the functional pastoral care approaches and strategies that can support such students at Bowen University. The study employs a practical theological framework incorporating four key theological tasks: the descriptive-empirical task, which asks, "What is going on?"; the interpretive task, which asks, "Why is this happening?"; the normative task, which considers, "What ought to be happening?"; and the pragmatic task, which seeks to determine, "What action should be taken henceforth? Interviews and was use to collect the data. The sample consisted of eighteen (18) students from various academic levels who had been affected by substance abuse, undergone rehabilitation, and were subsequently reabsorbed into the university. In addition, seven (7) chaplains, serving as pastoral caregivers, were included in the sample, resulting in a total sample size of twenty-five (25). Ethical clearance was obtained from both Stellenbosch University and Bowen University prior to data collection, and informed consent was secured from all participants. Each interview, lasting approximately 45 minutes, was conducted in the presence of a professional psychologist to provide support in the event of distress or crisis. The collected data were transcribed and analysed using ATLAS.ti software, with the findings presented through thematic analysis. The research findings revealed that the current spiritual approach employed by the chaplains of Bowen University in caring for students affected by substance abuse is inadequate. The holistic well-being approach, encompassing the spiritual, academic, intellectual, emotional, physical, social, and ethical dimensions of students’ lives, was largely neglected in the chaplains’ caregiving practices. The study therefore concludes that chaplains at Bowen University should adopt a holistic welfare pastoral care approach for students affected by substance abuse, in line with the cura vitae theory, rather than relying solely on the spiritual approach. Furthermore, students should be equipped as lay theologians and volunteer caregivers to support their peers struggling with substance abuse. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar.
