Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is an endemic South African plant that has potential as an ergogenic aid to assist in addressing both of these factors. It contains polyphenols which can increase blood flow and oxygen supply to muscles which could increase energy supplied by fat oxidation and is an antioxidant which could aid in protecting against cellular damage from reactive oxygen species. Despite this, research with Rooibos as an ergogenic aid in sport is scarce. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to add to our knowledge about Rooibos tea supplementation by examining its use an ergogenic aid in improving endurance performance and recovery. This study followed a randomized, cross-over experimental design. Fifteen participants completed the study. A two-stage treadmill protocol was designed. The first stage was a MFO test, followed immediately by a peak aerobic capacity test and then a 30 min passive recovery period. Participants first completed a baseline trial and then were given seven days to supplement with Rooibos or a control (water) before the next trial. Data regarding ventilation, substrate use, lactate concentrations, functional recovery and perceived levels of effort and recovery were collected. The results of this study found that one week of Rooibos tea supplementation did not achieve significant improvements in running performance or recovery in recreationally active males. However, it is suggested based on the effect sizes in this study, that future research which addresses its shortcomings might find significant results for endurance performance. The methodology of this study was critically analysed, and proposed changes are suggested to better investigate these potential benefits in future studies. If the limitations of this study were to be circumvented, results could show a benefit of Rooibos tea supplementation for running economy and/or peak aerobic capacity. This study adds to the limited research involving Rooibos tea supplementation for exercise purposes. It is also the first study to investigate the perceptual and functional recovery effects of Rooibos tea. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar nie.
