The churches within these inner cities may therefore be unaware prophets when it comes to change. They have often dealt with issues such as homelessness and changing demographics due to migration long before it affects surrounding areas. This study uses critical realism and narrative methodology to study three inner-city congregations to answer how older Dutch Reformed churches in South African inner cities are already embodying missio Dei within their unique contexts despite the big demographic changes in the country. Through participant observation and semi-structured interviews, it looks at what processes and practices they have used that may benefit other churches in becoming more contextualized and inclusive. Because of South Africa’s unique history, the study emphasises African literature.
