Dreyer, J. A. 2026. Familiarity and Function: Human‑Computer Interaction and Trust in Organizations. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available:https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/acea7cee-0d1c-434f-947f-ab9d50c15dc1 ENGLISH SUMMARY: The thesis employed a qualitative case study approach with interviews based on a conceptual framework developed from existing literature. The aim was to research the impact information technology usage has on trust within organisations, propose different methods of trust research based on verified measurable trust models, and provide practical ways for organisations to determine the impact of information technology usage on trust within their operations. The associations and rationale between technology trust attributes and their influence on interpersonal trust within organisations suggest that, within the context of information technology usage, information technology capital could be measured as part of interpersonal trust attributes. By synthesizing technology trust attributes with interpersonal trust attributes, this approach sheds light on how information technology usage impacts organisations. This is based on verified trust research models and proposes a new information technology trust model called the Information Technology Trust Inventory (ITTI. It integrates insights from the Behavioural Trust Inventory model and interview data from the qualitative case study, providing evidence of this phenomenon. Twelve participants from an information technology consultancy background were included in this study. Findings from this research show that technology trust influences interpersonal trust within organisations. From a practical standpoint, organisations will recognize the impact of technology trust on interpersonal trust, not only at a theoretical level but also in practice. By using the proposed model (ITTI), they can assess levels of trust within their organisations.
