Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/e74c15ea-4474-4f9b-a5b3-19b406548088 ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to explore stakeholder perceptions of the influence of organizational sports policies on the influence of professional male cricket players in the Western Cape, South Africa. An exploratory approach was used to gather qualitative data through semi-structured interviews with eight key stakeholders of the implementation of sports policies in the region (high-performance managers, coaches, past players, and CEOs) from Boland Cricket and Western Province Cricket Association. Analysis of the data set produced 11 themes and 23 sub-themes pertaining to stakeholder perceptions of organizational policies influencing the development and eventual success of professional male cricket players in the region. This research had findings in agreement with previous sport-specific research in the area of organizational policy management, with facilities, competition opportunities, and sports science and scientific research identified by stakeholders as key policy factors influencing the development of professional male cricket players in the Western Cape. Social and environmental factors were identified as an important theme to emerge from this research that has an influence on the development of professional players in the province. Further research in this area should attempt to further understand the social and environmental factors present in South Africa as a whole, and how they may influence the development of players on a broader national scale. In addition, further research in this area should be conducted in areas that constitute a different demographic make-up to that of the Western Cape province, which is one of the wealthier provinces in South Africa. The utility of this research is in providing suggestions and implications for the management of high-performance systems and talent pipelines in South African high-performance cricket, as well as contributing to the growing body of knowledge regarding sport-specific policy and high-performance systems research. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie was om die invloed van organisatoriese sportbeleide op die ontwikkeling van professionele krieketspelers in die Kaapse Skiereiland van die Wes-Kaap, Suid-Afrika, te ondersoek. ’n Verkennende navorsingsbenadering is gevolg, met kwalitatiewe data-insameling deur middel van semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude met agt sleutelbelanghebbendes betrokke by die implementering van sportbeleide in die streek. Hierdie deelnemers het bestaan uit hoëprestasie-bestuurders, afrigters, voormalige spelers en uitvoerende hoofde verbonde aan Boland Krieket en die Wes-Provinsie Krieketvereniging. Die data-analise het elf hooftemas en drie-en-twintig subtemas geïdentifiseer wat verband hou met organisatoriese beleide wat die ontwikkeling en uiteindelike sukses van professionele krieketspelers in die streek beïnvloed. Die bevindings stem ooreen met vorige sportspesifieke navorsing op die gebied van organisatoriese beleidsbestuur, spesifiek ten opsigte van die pilare wat in die SPLISS-model (Sports Policy factors Leading to International Sporting Success) bespreek word. Daarbenewens het unieke insigte na vore gekom met betrekking tot sosiale en omgewingsfaktore wat ’n invloed op die ontwikkeling van spelers in die streek uitoefen. Hierdie studie dui op die noodsaaklikheid van verdere navorsing oor die sosiale en omgewingskontekste wat kenmerkend is van Suid-Afrika as geheel, met die oog op ’n meer omvattende begrip van hoe hierdie faktore die ontwikkeling van sporttalent op nasionale vlak beïnvloed. Voorts word aanbeveel dat toekomstige navorsing ook fokus op provinsies met ’n ander demografiese samestelling as die Wes-Kaap, aangesien dit een van die meer ekonomies bevoorregte streke in Suid-Afrika verteenwoordig. Die bydrae van hierdie navorsing lê in die formulering van aanbevelings en beleidsimplikasies vir die bestuur van hoëprestasie-sportstelsels en talentontwikkelingskanale binne Suid-Afrikaanse krieket. Daarbenewens dra dit by tot die groeiende akademiese diskoers rondom sportspesifieke beleidsontwikkeling en hoëprestasie-navorsing.
