Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/0c3a95c0-24b5-4a9a-94d0-59db3b3abe19 This thesis concerns the question of ‘what it is like’ to engage with AI. The kind of engagement that I am concerned with is engagement that goes beyond interactions like requests for information or simple commands. Instead, I am interested in more substantial interactions with AI, e.g. the type of interactions with chatbots where we treat them as agents. I argue that such engagement should be understood as analogous to our engagement with fiction. I have termed this kind of engagement, full engagement. Full engagement is marked by four core properties – imagination, affective engagement, care, and epistemic indulgence. I portray our engagement with fiction as existing on a spectrum, with passive engagement at one end and active engagement at the other. In treating our engagement with AI as akin to our engagement with fiction, our engagement with AI is a heightened, more active engagement than that with fiction. In this way, then, this project interprets AI as self-generated and self-generating fiction. In making this argument, I draw heavily on fiction as well as ‘fandom’ spaces and activities.
