Confronting the frame: A critical analysis of selected narratives that persist in the Village Museum, Stellenbosch, South Africa, c. 2014 – 2024. Unpublished doctoral dissertation. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/bf6e5ac1-b920-4cba-a2fb-a6939edf7474 Established in Stellenbosch during the 1960s, the Village Museum was created against the background of developing Afrikaner nationalism in South Africa. Consequently, the narratives that were put into effect in the Village Museum at the time reflected Afrikaner nationalist ideology. With the dawn of a new democracy in the country in 1994 South African museums, including the Village Museum were tasked with critically evaluating the historical accounts that they disseminated by undergoing processes of transformation geared towards reflecting the ‘new’ South Africa. The Village Museum has since introduced new exhibitions in an attempt to transform. The most recent of these exhibitions is titled, “The History of Stellenbosch and its people” which was launched in 2014. I examine a selection of narratives as they were presented in the Village Museum between 2014 to 2024. These narratives comprise Simon van der Stel, slavery in Stellenbosch, Andries Petrus Lubbe (a shoemaker), Die Vlakte, and apartheid in Stellenbosch. I consider the degree to which the museum supports and reflects inclusivity by examining whether the histories of all Stellenbosch’s people receive equal consideration in the Village Museum’s displays. These issues lead to the central concern that drives the study, namely the problematics of inclusivity as they relate in the Village Museum. To engage with the enquiry, I approached the study from an interpretive perspective that employed qualitative, as well as mixed research methods. I conducted a case study of the Village Museum. To collect data, I interviewed (2015, 2016) and engaged in informal conversations with various members of staff at the VM, including the curator of the 2014 exhibition that I transcribed. To further inform the study, I include personal accounts, document observations and took photographs since 2014 until 2024 at the Village Museum. Three themes emerged from the research process to inform discussion and support argumentation. These themes comprise reflection on staged narratives, community engagement, and curation. The study’s findings lead me to suggest the Village Museum’s continued transformation processes. I propose that its sustainability depends on a collective and equal partnership between museum professionals, ordinary citizens and any other interested parties. A collective and equal partnership may produce imaginative ways to challenge past narratives at the Village Museum and address issues of inclusivity by forming narratives of equality that reflect Stellenbosch’s diversity.
