Digital citizenship is currently being taught to equip learners with the practical skills needed to participate in an ever-growing technology driven society; however, it was observed by myself and the other educators through informal discussions within the break rooms at the school, that there were instances of unkind behaviour between learners, specifically through the use of internet memes. As internet memes rely on visual cues to be understood by viewers and often uses humour through visual or written signs, I proposed that internet memes could be adapted into the art curriculum to promote critical digital citizenship and strengthen learners’ visual literacy. The case study focused on a group of 16 learners who shared internet memes they found interesting. Findings from the case study were analysed through critical citizenship in education, critical digital citizenship, visual culture, semiotics and memetics. The case study advocates for the use of internet memes as a tool for educators who wish to incorporate critical digital citizenship within an art curriculum to promote recognition of power and disempowerment.
