Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/2c3799d0-479d-4a99-8b47-88e6801efbb9 While there is existing research on LGBTQ+ representation in South African films, especially within the drama genre, the representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in specifically Afrikaans comedy films seems underexplored. This study aims to analyse how LGBTQ+ identities are represented in selected Afrikaans comedy films between 2010-2024 and to investigate how LGBTQ+ slurs contribute to the filmic representation of LGBTQ+ identities in these films. The research question of this study is: What patterns, if any, can be identified in the LGBTQ+ representations and LGBTQ+ slurs used in Afrikaans comedy films released between 2010 and 2024? The methodology incorporates secondary and primary data collection. A literature review examines existing research on LGBTQ+ representation in Afrikaans films, including inadequate representation using stereotypes, and the linguistic study of slurs. The primary data entails a multimodal content analysis of selected Afrikaans comedy films. The sampling strategy consists of a two stage selection process. In the first stage, a cursory search identified films that were Afrikaans-language comedy films, released between 2010 and 2024 and available on the Showmax streaming platform between 1 September 2024 and 31 December 2024. In the second stage, the identified films underwent an initial viewing to identify instances of LGBTQ+ representation and the use of LGBTQ+ slurs. Films featuring both LGBTQ+ slurs and LGBTQ+ representation, were selected for the second viewing and multimodal content analysis. The analytical framework utilised for the multimodal content analysis, termed the Auditory-Visual Interaction Framework (AVIF), adapts the Multimodal Helix framework proposed by Hughes and Riley (2012) and draws from the processes of anchorage and relay as proposed by Barthes (1977). Three films were identified that adhered to the selection criteria – Droomdag (2017), Oedipus: Die Musical (2019), and Thys & Trix (2018). The study found that the queer male characters represented in these films are portrayed using effeminacy as a visual and auditory shorthand for queerness and their depiction of queer male relationships are framed through heteronormative gender roles. The queer men appear as supporting or antagonistic characters with narrative arcs that are subordinate to those of the heterosexual protagonists. The films only incorporate queer male slurs, which are often used as punchlines and to elicit comedy, or in the context of in-group reclamation – where the adequate use of the slur seems to be eradicated by surrounding inadequate LGBTQ+ representation.
