Spiritual Intelligence in the Job Demands-Resources Model. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/f55c2b03-dc2c-4c9e-a7e1-6eca590f9745 The performance of human capital, or employees, is dependent on their wellbeing. This study focused on burnout and engagement, antithetical indicators of psychological wellbeing of employees. Burnout is associated with a lack of meaning, whereas engagement is partially facilitated by meaningful work. One source of meaning is spirituality. Thus, this study investigated whether spirituality, or more specifically, ‘spiritual intelligence’, contributes to employee engagement and/or burnout. The Job Demands-Resources model was used to investigate this relationship among 102 employees at a South African organisation, recruited through non-probability convenience sampling. Quantitative data were collected using an ex post facto, correlational, cross-sectional research design. A self-administered, online composite survey asked participants to complete the following scales: (1) the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9), (2) the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT-12), (3) the Job Demands-Resources Scale (JDRS), and (4) the Spiritual Intelligence Scale Self-Report Measure (SISRI-24). The data were analysed using item analysis and partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results support the validity of the JD-R model with respect to the relationships amongst job demands, and occupational wellbeing outcomes. Spiritual intelligence showed a weak, marginally significant relationship with burnout (β = -0.17, p = 0.098) that did not meet conventional significance thresholds, explaining less than 3% of variance. No relationship was observed with employee engagement. The findings suggest limited evidence for integrating spiritual intelligence in the JD-R framework in this context. The research paper concludes by providing practical implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research.
