Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work. Thesis (M Social Work)--Stellenbosch University, 2026. Van der Bergh, K. 2026. Social work services for the prevention of school dropout in disadvantaged communities. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/77bd4e6d-a579-4dad-92cc-ed4e61f3780c School going children from disadvantaged communities are at risk to dropout given their negative social and economic circumstances, which include food insecurity, inadequate school infrastructure and gangsterism. In light of these circumstances, this research shows insight into the social work services available to school going children from disadvantaged communities for the prevention of school dropout. The literature review covers two major areas, firstly exploring the needs and circumstances of school going children from disadvantaged communities. The second area of focus was on describing the social work services that should be available for the prevention of school dropout in disadvantaged communities, from a social developmental approach within the South African context. A qualitative approach to the research was applied using exploratory and descriptive design methods. In order to find participants, a non-probability sampling, along with purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants who all render social work services to school going children from disadvantaged communities. They were either employed by non-governmental organisations, or directly by school governing bodies. The data gained during these interviews was transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. The significant findings of the study were that school going children from disadvantaged communities face challenges within their family (primary socialisation), school and community (secondary socialisation) which can lead to them dropping out of school. Based on theory, this means that their fundamental human needs are not being met, impacting on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and negatively impacting their score on the Social Progress Index. Hereby resulting in their wellbeing needs being unmet. Social workers are however, in a unique position to provide both services and access to programmes that can help meet these needs as demonstrated in the data. These needs are addressed during individual therapeutic counselling sessions (case work), encouraging positive peer relationships (group work) and through facilitating feeding schemes and implementing awareness campaigns about social issues (community work initiatives). Thus, social workers can offer access to services that may empower learners from disadvantaged communities to stay in school, exercise their right to education, and in turn promote their future economic participation.
