Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of African Languages. Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2026. Tshetu, Z. 2026. The study of isiXhosa as a persuasive language in political contexts: A metaphorical analysis. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/ad77a9b8-d1d6-4f45-af68-547eb99ce292 IsiXhosa is one of the predominantly spoken languages in South Africa, but its significance is limited in political settings. Understanding how isiXhosa can be used efficiently as a persuasive tool while focusing on metaphors as a persuasive technique can help to identify ways to support and promote the need for the language in professional political settings. This study analyses and evaluates the relationship between isiXhosa and persuasion in political discourse. To achieve this objective, this qualitative study analysed two political speeches presented by two different native Xhosa politicians. The data was analysed using the Critical Discourse Analysis and the Contemporary Metaphor Theory. The analysis reveals that isiXhosa political language has rhetorical devices aimed at persuading the audience while building the political party’s positive image to the public. This concludes that isiXhosa is a persuasive language in politics supplemented by rhetoric strategies like metaphors. These findings aim to promote linguistic equity, support inclusive language policies and enhance democratic participation by valuing indigenous languages in political contexts. Further research can expand into focusing on how other isiXhosa speaking politicians use the language in political contexts, how culture influences these language dynamics and how the audience responds to isiXhosa being used as a persuasive tool.
