Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/e3a3540a-bb6a-4519-b5c7-0bcb9c8acc30 This study investigates the role and impact of independent living units (ILUs) within the South African mental health care system, focusing on their contribution to recovery, autonomy, and social reintegration for individuals with mental disorders. As mental health care shifts from long-term institutional settings to community-based models, ILUs serve as critical intermediaries, providing structured environments that support life skills development, psychosocial care, and participation in daily and community life. Through a qualitative approach, the research examines the functions of ILUs, challenges experienced by residents, and strategies for empowerment using a biopsychosocial framework. Findings indicate that ILUs promote independence and self-efficacy. However, systemic limitations – such as fragmented services, insufficient resources, and social stigma – can impede their effectiveness. The study also highlights the central role of multidisciplinary service providers, whose collaboration and expertise are essential for delivering holistic care, fostering skill development, and supporting residents’ autonomy. The study concludes that while ILUs embody the principles of deinstitutionalisation, their success depends on coordinated policies, integrated support systems, and active engagement with families and communities. Recommendations emphasise ongoing professional development, regular evaluation of ILU programmes, and strategies to strengthen social inclusion. This research contributes to understanding community-based mental health care in South Africa and offers insights for enhancing services that support individuals transitioning from institutional to independent living contexts.
