Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/4a94caf9-f4a6-40e7-9e4d-2b3666427373 This thesis explores the revival of Khoi and San identities in post-apartheid South Africa through the case study of Knoflokskraal, a land occupation settlement in the Western Cape. It argues that Knoflokskraal is not just a land reclamation site, but a living archive of cultural restoration, community-making, and inclusive indigeneity. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and theoretical analysis, the study examines how residents navigate historical erasure, internal diversity, and the pursuit of recognition. It highlights how bonding and bridging social capital, informal governance, and everyday practices foster social cohesion while maintaining cultural autonomy. It also investigates the political tensions within Knoflokskraal, particularly the challenges posed by fragmented leadership and tribal distinctions and proposes reframing cohesion through shared values rather than uniformity. Ultimately, the study contributes to broader debates on indigeneity, symbolic capital, and postcolonial revival, offering Knoflokskraal as a model of inclusive sovereignty where belonging is forged through shared vulnerability, cultural resurgence, and the refusal to be forgotten.
