Too often, gender-based violence (or GBV) is perceived and characterised solely as men’s violence against women, crafting masculine subjectivities as inherently negative. This study explores the experiences of men studying at Stellenbosch University relating to the ways in which they negotiate their masculinity in the context of gender-based violence and anti-GBV sentiment, specifically #MenAreTrash. This research further explores how artsbased methods using clay can facilitate embodied expressions, deepening participants’ insights. Using arts-based research, through a feminist lens, participants engaged in claybased creative conversations designed to promote reflection on how they understand, respond to, and make meaning of masculinity within a social climate keenly aware of GBV. The creative conversations were based on semi-structured interview schedules, which transformed from one session to the next. Data was generated through hands-on clay creations, group discussions and reflection by participants within the group and written down. Thematic analysis was applied to identify themes within the participants’ insight across oral, visual and textual dimensions. Discussions initially centred around GBV, #MenAreTrash and masculinity, showing how participants have created strategies for living a blamed identity while trying to embody progressive masculine ideals. However, care emerged as a salient theme, highlighting the ways that participants give, received and embody care within normative masculine frameworks. Through this analysis, it became clear that participants are deeply affected by the narratives surrounding not only anti-GBV work, but also the expectations of masculinity. Through art-making, participants were able to deepen their insights, externalise their beliefs, and process their personal values in embodied ways. Findings illustrate the value of arts-based research to provide an enhanced exploration of male participant’s navigations of masculinity within anti-GBV discourse. This suggests future possibilities for creative, feminist interventions that move beyond critique of violence towards cultivating relational and embodied practises.
