Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/feb863f3-e970-4af2-a059-e1d8cde7edca A significant body of research exists on male adolescent voice change (MAVC) while comparatively little is available on female adolescent voice change (FAVC). As a result, many choral conductors have limited familiarity with this topic, and some are unaware that it even exists. Insufficient understanding of the physiological changes in the female adolescent’s vocal apparatus, ineffective methods of guiding choristers through perceptual changes, and an insensitivity to the psychological impact of female adolescent voice change often lead to poor singing, harm vocal health, and fail to foster a meaningful choral or listening experience. Through a critical review of literature, this study aims to synthesise existing research on the physiological and perceptual changes in the adolescent female voice, while also proposing practice-based and evidence-based pedagogical strategies and vocal exercises to address common symptoms of FAVC. The study demonstrates that female adolescent voice change is a biological process, driven by hormonal changes and subsequent physiological development. When conductors understand this phenomenon, possess comprehensive knowledge of vocal pedagogy, and adopt a holistic, nurturing approach when working with female adolescent choristers, choral music becomes more equitable for these singers, and more meaningful for ensembles, conductors, and audiences.
