Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Industrial Psychology. Thesis (MCom)--Stellenbosch University, 2026. Hasheela, C. T. 2026. The influence of team cohesion on safety behaviour within the context of other relevant human factors. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/24fac172-3e6c-4289-9344-95c325d59611 The purpose of this study was to examine how team cohesion influences safety behaviour within high-risk manufacturing environments, particularly in the context of other relevant human factors. The study aimed to enhance organisational safety performance by identifying key psychological mechanisms that mediate the relationship between team cohesion and safety behaviour. Informed by the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the research focused on safety motivation, safety attitudes, subjective norms, knowledge-seeking behaviour, and decision-making styles as critical mediators. Numerous studies have shown that effective safety behaviour reduces workplace accidents, improves operational continuity, and enhances employee well-being. However, existing safety interventions often overlook the complex interplay between team dynamics and individual psychological readiness. The literature review explored the constructs of safety behaviour, team cohesion, and human factors, revealing that while team cohesion is widely recognised as a positive team dynamic, its direct influence on safety behaviour remains inconclusive. A structural model was developed and tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) on data collected from 109 team-based production employees in a high-risk Namibian manufacturing company. The model accounted for 70% of the variance in safety behaviour, demonstrating strong predictive validity. The findings revealed that team cohesion does not directly influence safety behaviour but exerts a significant indirect effect through safety attitudes and safety motivation. Safety attitude emerged as the strongest predictor of safety behaviour, while subjective norms, knowledge-seeking behaviour, and decision-making styles showed limited or no direct influence. The study contributes to both theoretical and practical understanding by demonstrating that psychological readiness, particularly intrinsic motivation and attitudinal alignment, is essential for translating team cohesion into effective safety behaviour. These insights offer valuable guidance for managers seeking to foster safer work environments through team-based interventions. The findings underscore the need for safety strategies that go beyond procedural compliance and instead focus on cultivating cohesive teams that support psychological safety, motivation, and shared safety values.
