A sociology of mothering: Exploring experiences of single mothers in Esidumbini Tongaat, KZN. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/6feaec8a-7dc8-46b2-9486-dca8f068490e This study focuses on single mothers’ experiences in Esidumbini-Tongaat, a rural area in KwaZulu-Natal, and explores the challenges they face, and the strategies mothers adapt to cope with single parenting. Current literature on single mothers stresses the financial burden single mothers’ experience. This study posits that, although this focus on the economic realities of single mothers is important, it does not fully explore what it means to be a single mother within a cultural and religious context, particularly in rural areas where there are culturally informed demands and expectations of a mother. To understand single mothering experiences and strategies, the study adopted a qualitative research design, using semi-structured interviews as the data collection method. Drawing on the experiences of the 10 single mothers interviewed, this study argues that being seen as a good mother in the context of Esidumbini gave single mothers access to a network of care that provides financial and childcare support. Therefore, single mothers in Esidumbini strived to be “good mothers” as being a good mother was essential for accessing a network of care.
