Adoption of climate-smart agriculture in the peri-urban small towns of Kibaigwa and Dumila, Tanzania. Unpublished doctoral dissertation. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/7c60924c-493d-4437-a5e9-e24f19738c46 The sustainability of peri-urban agriculture (PUA) is increasingly under threat due to rapid urbanization and the escalating impacts of climate change, particularly in developing countries. These challenges have amplified food insecurity and strained access to socio-economic services, prompting the need for agricultural innovations that can enhance food production and climate resilience. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has emerged as a strategic innovation to address these concerns by improving productivity, fostering adaptation and reducing emission. This study investigates the adoption and sustainability impacts of CSA practices and technologies (CSAPTs) in the peri-urban small towns of Dumila and Kibaigwa in Tanzania. The study adopted a mixed-method design, specifically a concurrent nested approach. In the first phase a random sample survey was conducted with 218 peri-urban farmers to assess the CSA knowledge, perception and practices. Findings from this phase informed the second phase involving in-depth interview with 10 farmers, field visits and sustainability assessments using the sustainability assessment for food and agriculture (SAFA) framework with six purposively selected CSA adopters. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and simple liner regression and qualitative data were analysed using thematic techniques. While PUA has been recognized as a potential strategic for addressing urbanization and the challenges of climate change, a review of national policies showed very few policies, including the National Agriculture Policy (2013), that explicitly address peri-urban agriculture (PUA) while most others focus on rural agriculture. Regarding to climate analysis, analyses showed a general increase in maximum and minimum temperatures and slightly increased rainfall with high variability, all being trends that reflect climate change. In addition, the research revealed spatial differences in CSA awareness, with more than half of the respondents in Dumila indicating a high awareness compared to only one third in Kibaigwa. These results are linked to differences in project exposure and training. Despite challenges such as high cost of inputs and infrastructure, particularly irrigation and improved seeds, half of the farmers had adopted some of CSAPTs promoted by government and others between 2020-2023, showing a rapid adoption trend. While the analysis of CSA adoption based on diffusion of innovation (DoI) theory showed that farmers from the two towns are at the early stage of knowledge gathering, the adoption trend is rapid, and all farmers are classed in the early adopter and early majority categories. The SAFA assessment indicated strong social and economic sustainability, but lower environmental performance of CSA due to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and high use of chemical inputs. Overall, the study affirms CSA’s potential in enhancing the sustainability of PUA under climate change. With greater policy support, organized awareness campaigns and practical demonstrations, CSA can widely be adopted and support broader food security and climate adaption goals in urbanizing regions targeted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. However, the findings also underscore a critical gap between awareness and adoption, suggesting a need for more strategic efforts to enhance CSA uptake.
