Incorporating Ubuntu into the Workplace: A tale of two possible theories. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/f83eb0ac-9c18-4303-944b-bfb6cc54acb8 Ubuntu embodies profound religious, cultural, and ethical importance for African people, it constitutes the core of African philosophy. Ubuntu is a multifaceted concept which has been interpreted in different ways. In the economic sphere, research has shown that the competitiveness of an enterprise depends on several variables, including, among others, cultural beliefs and values. These cultural beliefs and values play a pivotal role in informing the choices that people make and the values they uphold. Under the banner of globalisation, the business environment of the twenty-first century is increasingly becoming cosmopolitan, and so is the workplace. As the world integrates and fragments, pockets of contestation are created. Operationalising Ubuntu in an environment dominated by hegemonic values is always going to be a challenge. This may partly be because Ubuntu marks a clear departure from individualistic or contractarian approach of business to one that is communal in orientation. The central focus of this thesis is on how to incorporate Ubuntu into the workplace. To achieve this, the thesis explores two possible approaches, the first one being Thaddeus Metz’s theory of right action and the second being the Integrative Social Contracts Theory (ISCT). Having provided an overview of both theories, the thesis applies the central tenets of the two theories to a real life situation drawn from the Labour Court case of Harmony Goldmine Company Limited v Raffee NO and Others (JR1205/15) [2018] ZALCJHB 169; (2018) 39 ILJ 2017 (LC) (8 May 2018). The thesis then compares and critiques the two approaches.
