Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work. Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2026. Mmile,H. K. 2026. Required content and format of social work supervision training in South Africa. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/a2c1cb60-5222-470c-918a-ac2c0ea015a1 Supervision has been an indispensable component of the social work profession since its inception, yet the effective preparation of supervisors through structured training remains an under-researched area. Within the South African context, supervision is an essential component of social work practice, so much so that the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) necessitates the training of supervisors. Furthermore, the Supervision Framework by the Department of Social Development & South African Council for Social Service Professionals (DSD & SACSSP, 2012) prompted South African scholars to consistently emphasise the centrality of supervision and implicitly highlight the need for training as a means to enhance practices nationwide over the past decade. While international and local scholarship has provided substantial insight into the functions and models of supervision, there remains limited empirical evidence on the specific content and format that should underpin training for South African social work supervisors. This study drew upon Hardcastle’s scenistic training model and Knowles’ adult education principles as theoretical points of departure, recognising the importance of experiential, context-specific and adult-centred learning approaches in training. The study further explored and investigated what constitutes as the required content and format of supervision training programmes within the South African context. The research was motivated by statutory developments, such as the South African Council for Social Service Professions’ (SACSSP) Continuous Professional Development (CPD) policy, as well as the recent move towards specialisation in supervision. Despite these regulatory advances, no consensus exists regarding what content and format should form the foundation of supervisor training programmes. The study followed a qualitative research approach with a combination of an exploratory and descriptive research design. There was a total of fifteen participants for the study, recruited through two non-probability sampling methods namely purposive and snowball sampling. The sample consisted of social work supervisors who were employed in both government and non-government settings. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews with the aid of an interview schedule. The interviews were audio and videotaped via Microsoft Teams, thereafter transcribed verbatim. The data was analysed through thematic analysis. The study concluded that the lack of standardisation in the content and format of supervision training undermined the effectiveness of supervisory practice in South Africa. Primary recommendations were directed at policymakers, training institutions, and professional bodies, calling for the establishment of benchmarked training standards, ongoing evaluation of training programmes, and investment in accessible, high-quality training opportunities. Ultimately, by equipping supervisors with the required skills and knowledge through appropriately designed training, social work supervision in South Africa can be strengthened, contributing to improved service delivery and professional development within the profession.
